WASHINGTON -- Today, we have witnessed history, as the U.S. Senate confirmed Ketanji Brown Jackson to the U.S. Supreme – the first African American woman to ever serve on the nation’s highest court. Judge Jackson is the first justice with experience as a federal public defender and the first one since Justice Thurgood Marshall with significant experience as a criminal defense attorney on behalf of low-income defendants. And while the majority of the Senate agreed on the historical importance of Judge Jackson’s nomination and her legal qualifications, unfortunately countless Senate Republicans mischaracterized her record and shamelessly questioned her credibility. Her hearing proved to the country that she has the temperament needed to be seated on the Supreme Court, along with the thoroughness and thoughtfulness necessary to applying our laws under the Constitution. Judge Jackson’s judicial and life experiences clearly show that she will be a Justice for all people.
