WASHINGTON --- Today, the UnidosUS Action Fund announced its endorsement of California Governor Gavin Newsom in the recall election.

“Governor Newsom has been a longstanding advocate for the Latino community in California,” said Janet Murguia, the President of UnidosUS Action Fund. “He has worked to provide access to healthcare for immigrants and create a stronger social safety net for working people. The alternative would destroy more than 20 years of fighting for a favorable California for immigrants, and we cannot allow that to happen.”

Latinos are the largest ethnic group in California and make up about 30% of registered voters in the state. Newsom has supported many of the UnidosUS Action Fund’s policy priorities for Latinos, including providing more money for English learners and the Cal-grant program, expanding Medi-Cal health insurance to cover undocumented immigrants age 50 and older, billions in small business grants, creating affordable homes, and rent relief. With anti-immigrant groups pushing for this recall, the state with the largest Latino population in the country cannot risk stopping its progress or going backwards.

Under Governor Newsom’s leadership, the Golden State is also beating the pandemic. Californians have some of the highest vaccination levels in the country – leaving them better protected against variants than most other states.

The Action Fund is calling on Californians to take a stand for the state’s future and vote NO on the recall. The Executive Director for the UnidosUS Action Fund, Rafael Collazo, and the California State Director, Esmeralda López, are available for media interviews on the endorsement.
